Mikhail Chigorin - Wilhelm Steinitz 1892

 

En 1892, Wilhelm Steinitz defendió su título contra su antiguo rival, Mikhail Chigorin. Al igual que en la primera oportunidad Steinitz-Chigorin, este encuentro se llevó a cabo en La Habana, Cuba, y una vez más, Steinitz salió triunfante.

 Lo más destacado de esta contienda es el final más impactante en la historia del Campeonato. En el juego # 23, Chigorin, una pieza por delante, estuvo a punto de empatar el marcador en 9-9 y enviar el campeonato a la prórroga. En lugar de sellar su movimiento, lo hizo en el tablero y, al hacerlo, desprotegió su peón h, lo que le permitió a Steinitz un mate en dos que terminó el partido. (Rumores hay que tenía sus tragos encima…)

 Y así, después de 23 juegos, Steinitz ganó el Campeonato del Mundo, con una puntuación de +10-8 = 5.
