En septiembre de 2002, en la partida Rusia contra el resto del mundo, Polgár finalmente derrotó a Garry Kasparov en un juego. El torneo se jugó bajo reglas rápidas con 25 minutos por juego y una bonificación de 10 segundos por movimiento. Ella ganó la partida con un juego posicional excepcional. Kasparov con Negras eligió la Defensa Berlinesa en lugar de su habitual Siciliana.

Polgár procedió con una línea que Kasparov ha utilizado previamente. Ella fue capaz de atacar con sus Torres al Rey de Kasparov que todavía estaba en el centro del tablero y cuando estaba dos peones menos, Kasparov renunció. El juego ayudó al equipo mundial a ganar el encuentro 52–48.
