Un extraordinario año para Magnus. En el 2009 gana el Súper Torneo de Nanjing con un performance ELO 3002. Y con tan solo 19 años.  Se especulaba en ese entonces, que Carlsen había anunciado su vinculación con Kasparov como su nuevo entrenador y que eso había influenciado psicológicamente a sus adversarios en este Torneo.
